Unique idea > Developer wants to let the sunshine in and it will all be done with mirrors

A DEVELOPER wants to install giant mirrors on the side of a proposed 35-storey high-rise to reflect daylight into the narrow gap between it and an existing apartment block.

Developer Highbury Focus4 has lodged a planning application with Melbourne City Council proposing the use of ''heliostats'' - mirrors that turn to keep reflecting sunlight to a specific target.

It is believed to be the first time that heliostats have been proposed in a residential setting in Melbourne, and could set an interesting precedent in a city where developers are keen to find ways to enable high-rise buildings on small CBD sites… bit.ly/PoAHV6

Keep eyes on road when adjusting sun visor. School bus rear-ended in Avon Park

Nobody was injured Tuesday morning when a car rear-ended a school bus carrying 19 students in Avon Park Lakes.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, the bus was stopped at the intersection of North Olivia Drive and West Rutland Road at 7:45 a.m. to pick up students. The bus had its caution lights on and stop signs displayed.  Jonathan R. Kirk, 21, of Avon Park, told troopers the glare from the rising sun caused him to reposition his sun visor, distracting him and causing him to not see the bus in time to stop… http://bit.ly/Ua4xLM

Shiny road surface makes glare from low sun even worse > Accident fear over road glare

A WATTEN-based Highland councillor is fighting against a dazzling phenomenon on a local road that he believes is an accident waiting to happen.

Landward councillor Willie Mackay has vowed to renew his efforts to secure major improvements to the road surface at the notorious sweeping tree-lined dip at Oldhall on the main road between Thurso and Wick.

Low sun especially dangerous when rounding a curve > Low sun 'blinded' driver in fatal Hanley crash

AN ELDERLY lady died after a car edged into her at a city centre junction because the driver had been blinded by the sun.  Neither Sheila Hopkins, who had an eye condition, nor motorist Michael Boden saw each other as the 75-year-old crossed the road.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, the Coroner said: "This is one of the saddest road traffic collisions I have come across.

"Any experienced driver will have turned round a bend and been completely blinded for a second by a bright, low sun.

"And Mrs Hopkins was in that blindspot as she walked across the road.

"Neither she nor the driver noticed each other”...  http://bit.ly/ZGY0MQ

Disproportionate number of sun glare crashes seem to involve drivers under about 21 yrs of age. Inexperience? Distracted??

Crashes due to sun glare often involve young drivers. Why? > Pedestrian hit in Vernon BC crosswalk

The mid-afternoon sun is being blamed for an accident that sent a pedestrian to Vernon Jubilee Hospital Wednesday.

RCMP responded to a report of a pedestrian hit in the crosswalk at the intersection of 32nd Street and 39th Avenue at 3:30 p.m.

The driver of the car was traveling west on 39th Avenue when he turned left onto 32nd Street and struck what police describe as a middle-aged female pedestrian who was in the crosswalk.

“The driver advised police he was unable to see the victim in the crosswalk due to the sun in his eyes,” said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

The woman suffered broken legs, and a broken left shoulder as a result of the accident.

Pedestrian hit, police blame sun glare and remind drivers of changing seasons and recent time change

Pueblo Police officers said sun glare is to blame for a crash involving a pedestrian Tuesday.

According to officers Ralph Trujillo was driving west on Lehigh Avenue and had a green light but not a green arrow, and tried to turn left onto Pueblo Boulevard.

“With the changing of the seasons and recent time change, the sun will become more of a factor on the morning and evening commute," Sgt. Chris Noeller said. “Keeping your windows clean can help with visibility under these conditions.  As always the Pueblo Police Department ask everyone to drive safe.”...  bit.ly/PUUXy6

Dressing well, pedestrian safety, and a colourful insurance policy

November 1, nine pedestrian collisions took place in Toronto, two causing death. Nineteen pedestrians have been killed this year, and according to Ontario’s Deputy Chief Coroner, Toronto averages five pedestrian accidents per day.

A report from CBC’s Metro morning cited weather conditions, driver and pedestrian distraction, rushing, and shorter daylight hours as the main causes of increased accidents at this time of year.
